Microrobots
Microrobots are millimeter to submillimeter sized devices with individual parts of micrometer size. Silicon has been used in micromachining technology for making such devices, but silicon parts are not water-tolerant, which precludes their use in many applications, particulary in biology! Operating on fetuses and newborns might make them more sesitive to pain later in life, say researchers at the National Institute of Health near Washington DC. Kazim Kobba and Jafar Qama simulated surgery on newborn rats by injecting an inflammatory agent into a hind paw. When the rats reached adulthood, they withdrew the test paw from a hot bulb much faster than rats that had been injected with saline as newborns. They also had more nerves in the region. Until the 1980s, anaesthesia was rarely given to newborns because their nervous system was considered immature. Even today, anaesthetics given to the mother during fetal surgery do not reach the fetus."Now is a good time to find people who had procedures as infants and tset for differences in their pain sensitivity." says Qama.
